Metro to remember OR Tambo

The Ekurhuleni Metro is set to present a befitting commemoration for the late struggle stalwart, OR Tambo, who would be turning 99 years old on October 27. 

Ekurhuleni has dubbed October as O R Tambo Month to keep his legacy alive.

The month long commemorative programme under the theme “Celebrating the life, times and legacy of O.R Tambo, 99 years and counting towards the centenary” began on Saturday, October 15, with symphonic sounds of the Choral Male Choirs Extravaganza at the HH Ngakane Community Hall in Kwa-Thema.

The Choral Male Choir Extravaganza will be followed by a soulful choral music competition which, will see an array of choirs across the metro exhibiting talents at the Thokoza Auditorium on Saturday, October 22.

Tambo was known for his flair as a music composer, song arranger, skilful producer and choir director.

On October 21 to 24, the metro will host schools’ debates and workshops at the OR Tambo Cultural Precinct in Watville.

The debates will ensure that Tambo’s’ ideals are imparted to the younger generations.

On Thursday, October 27, President Jacob Zuma will lead a wreath laying ceremony to pay his respects at the graveside of Adelaide and OR Tambo at the Tamboville Cemetery in Wattville.

The Tambo’s Cemetery is a National Heritage Site.

An opera theatrical production depicting the life of Tambo will be showcased at the Springs Theatre on Friday, October 28, to promote classical music as an art form that was so dear to the Struggle icon.

Furthermore, the metro will host the OR Tambo Youth Games at the Wattville Stadium on Saturday October 29.

The day’s activities will include soccer, aerobics and the 6km fun walk of a circular route around Tambo Memorial.

The O R Tambo programme will be closed on Sunday, October 30 with a jazz session at the OR Tambo Cultural Precinct to be headlined by various Jazz artists.
