The arrest took place on Tuesday, October 4, at around 5.20pm.
The arrested suspect was found in possession of a loaded revolver, which had its serial number filed off.
EMPD spokesman Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago said a traumatised security officer at the mall waved down EMPD Katlehong Precinct officers on patrol and pointed in the direction of one of the three robbers who had just fled the scene of the crime on foot after shooting a police officer in the head.
Metro police reacted swiftly and pursued the suspect, who was arrested in the nearby bushes along Sefolo Street.
Kgasago said the sweet shop was robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash and several cellphones.
“The arrested suspect was identified at Vosloorus Police Station as a wanted criminal, who had been involved in several incidents in which police were shot at,” he added.
The 33-year-old suspect was charged with attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
He is expected to appear in the Vosloorus Magistrates Court soon.
In-depth investigations are underway to apprehend the man’s two accomplices, who are still at large with the loot.
The seriously wounded policeman is receiving medical attention at a nearby medical facility.
