This was the order of proceedings as a Cameron Lentoor-led East Rand United pasted Kempton Park 59-20 in their Valke Peregrine League encounter, at the Reiger Park Rugby Stadium, on Saturday, June 4.
The flying wing scored 39 of his side’s total in yet another Man of the Match performance as he helped his team to a stylish bonus point win.
Lentoor scored five tries and converted seven of United’s total of nine tries, following a relatively slow start to the game by the hosts, with the visitors scoring the first try of the match.
United, however, ran away with the game, in a literal sense to an extent, in the second-half as they outscored the hapless visitors 40-7 following a well-contested first stanza which saw the sides go into the break with the score reading 19-13 in United’s favour.
“We started very slowly because we thought it was going to be an easy game, but Kempton scored the first try,” echoed United captain and blindside flank Fanie van Staden.
“Our scrums were not up to scratch and we were all over the place in the breakdowns, but the guys took it to the next gear and we improved, especially in the breakdowns.
“The team effort is what satisfied me the most. Everyone gelled together and we scored beautiful running tries and the spirit of the team was high – that was the most satisfying thing for me,” explained the skipper.
Indeed, United never looked back once they took it to the next gear as the backline turned on the afterburners.
They looked to run the ball from anywhere on the pitch and it worked wonders for them as they repeatedly and willingly broke Kempton’s line as the floodgates opened.
Such was the level of easiness for United that Lentoor jogged with ball in-hand with a smile on his face for his fourth try.
He was joined by Clayton Gindan, Calvin Jantjies, Sakkie Klaas and Morne Badenhorst as United’s try-scorers. Badenhorst showed amazing ball control skills before dotting down for his score.
Meanwhile, in a rare occurrence, United and Kempton’s second teams drew 10-all after going into half-time also tied, at five-all.
United’s u-21s kept Kempton scoreless in the second-half as they eased to a 50-5 drubbing after leading 36-5 at the break.
Warranted credit must duly be given to United’s crowd, who are undoubtedly the club’s 16th man.
