Man jailed for life, plus 20 years for terrorising community

The Boksburg police have again proven that crime does not pay, by securing the conviction of a 26-year-old Zimbabwean man who terrorised the community of Angelo.

Mathopola Moyo, who was arrested by the Boksburg police after he had terrorised the community of the informal settlement, has been sentenced to life imprisonment plus 20 years for his heinous crimes.

The Boksburg police said Moyo struck terror into the community of the informal settlement, committing crimes that included murder and pointing of a firearm, before he was finally brought to book in 2015.

Moyo was handed the hefty sentences in the South Gauteng High Court, sitting in Palm Ridge, for a number of charges, early this month.

The sentencing came after he was found guilty of murder, pointing of a firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.

For the murder he was sentenced to life imprisonment. He also received five years for pointing of a firearm, 10 years for possession of an unlawful firearm and five years for possession of ammunition.

All the other sentences are to run concurrently with the life sentence.

The man’s sentencing came after months of outstanding detective work by the Boksburg SAPS Detective Branch.

Det Sgt Calvin Mphaphuli and his colleagues continuously followed up on every lead that was sent in their direction – to ensure that the perpetrator was sent to prison.

Mphaphuli, however, applauded members of the public whose information led to the arrest of Moyo after he was listed as a wanted suspect for the “execution-style shooting” of a man he shot 11 times, outside a tavern, in 2014. -@FanieFLK
