Nurses at OR Tambo Memorial Hospital in Boksburg have called for the community and the political leadership to listen by implementing healthcare reforms.
Nurses at the hospital celebrated International Nurses Day (commemorated on May 12) on May 18. This year’s theme of the special day was: ‘Nurses: a force for change – improving health systems’ resilience’.
Dressed proudly in their white nurse’s uniform, they were treated on the day to various speakers while some of them received long-service awards.
The hundreds of nurses who gathered at the OR Tambo hospital were encouraged to treat patients with respect.

According to Pearl Molefe, member of the nurse’s forum, nurses work under horrible conditions and they are expected to work without resources and produce good results.
“We make plenty of sacrifices and we work very hard to cater and treat every patient fairly,” said Molefe.
According to nurse Mavis Malekane, it is important for the public to remember the importance of their profession and the valuable service they offer.
“Nurses are the backbone of the community. Choosing a career in nursing is a calling; we do this not for the money but because of the passion and love we harbour for those in need,” Malekane said.
