Brakpan thrash Boksburg at drenched PG Park

Log-leading Brakpan lived up to their overwhelming favourites tag when they sank Boksburg 61-16 in their Valke Peregrine League match, on Saturday.

The half-time score was 21-9 to the visitors in the May 14 encounter.

As was expected, the reigning champions controlled proceedings throughout the encounter, but credit must be given to the Owls for keeping themselves in touching distance until the last 20 minutes, when Brakpan pulled away.

The eventual score was flattering to the visitors, who took the game away from Boksburg in the last quarter of the match, as their superior fitness levels saw them through with the rain beginning to come down harder.

Boksburg had made the encounter a contest up to that point, with the score at 33-16 in favour of the defending champions.

However, a flurry of tries followed and demoralised a well-beaten Boksburg – with Brakpan’s superiority thoroughly put on display for those committed fans who braved the cold and rain to come and support the two sides.

Ill-discipline did not help Boksbur’s case either; the home side found themselves playing with 12 men during the second-half as try-scorer Markus Leonard, Adriaan van der Nest and Marcaille Fransman were all sin-binned around the same time – a self-destructing turn of events against a quality side like Brakpan.

“Our lack of experience showed,” said Boksburg coach Marcell Fourie.

“My guys did very well – they stood their ground in most of the game’s stages. The final score did not reflect the game, but we were beaten by a better team.”

Leonard scored his team’s only try on the day, with PJ Beaukes converting.
