Police make arrests; seize booze during surprise raids

In their fight against crime in Boksburg, the newly formed Ekurhuleni SAPS Central Cluster conducted raids in different parts of Boksburg over the weekend.

Led by Boksburg SAPS’ Capt Nkululeko Nase, together with the management of the other 11 cluster stations, the strong team of police officers from the various stations raided several troublesome illegal shebeens in Angelo and Comet, arresting the owners and confiscating liquor.

One more person was also arrested for dealing in drugs, during the massive operations targeting unlicensed shebeens in the area.

The officers also conducted a roadblock on Cason Road, Boksburg North, during the operation.

Illegal shebeens in the informal settlements are said to be the biggest contributor to violent crime in those areas, and police vowed to continue to enforce the law, by conducting regular surprise raids.

Boksburg SAPS spokesperson, Lieut Kwendzakwakhe Ngobese said the operation was a success following the arrest of three people for illegally trading in alcohol in Comet.

The shebeen owners were later given a R1 500 fine before being released.

Meanwhile, the Boksburg police managed to arrest 22 suspects in connection with some of the various criminal offences reported over the weekend. -@FanieFLK
