CRICKET: United cruise past Boksburg

United Cricket Club captain Justin Gamble was back to his scintillating best when he led his on-form side to a seven-wicket win, before finishing with an undefeated 54, at Prince George Park, on Sunday, February 21.

Having won the coin toss, Gamble sent Boksburg in to bat first and, despite a decent start, with top order Freddie Whitehorne scoring a half tonne, the wheels soon came off for the home side and they limped to 160 all-out, after 41 overs.

This was a target that was attainable for a quality side like United.

Into their batting innings, the visitors stuttered out of the blocks and there was yet hope for the PG Park outfit to defend their vulnerable total, with United down 50/3.

With the home side’s bowlers growing in confidence, courtesy of the encouraging start to their total’s defence, and instilling hope throughout the camp – it was soon all going to be extinguished by the ruthless United duo of Gamble and Eden Links.

Their scores totalled a tonne, with the latter finishing four short of 50, with his unbeaten 46 and his skipper ending his innings standing, with 54.

The two doubled up their performances as they also impressed in the bowling stakes – both finishing with a hat-trick of wickets apiece (Gamble 3/32 in nine overs; Links 3/22 also in nine overs).

United’s Kevin Hinton’s performance with the leather also warrants praise, as he took 2/12 in six overs, including two maidens.

The match was rendered set and match as United needed just 23 overs to overhaul Boksburg’s score and finish with 163/3 – @SabeloBoksburg
