CRICKET: Kempton Park beats a spirited Boksburg premier side

Boksburg Cricket Club put on a rejuvenated performance in its four-wicket loss against neighbours Kempton Park at Prince George Park on Sunday, February 14.

The Valentine’s Day encounter saw the home side score an impressive 189 runs in its allotted 50 overs to give itself a realistic chance of causing an upset against the title-contender opposition.

Top batsman Ruan du Plessis found his touch again, and again starred for his side during his innings with some fine strokes, including a couple of fours and sixes in his final run score of 86.

His partner for a sizeable time of his innings, 15-year-old Maxwell Meyer, also stood out and scored 29 runs. Captain, Len Meyer finished with an unbeaten 27.

The visitors were not going to be denied, however, and they answered Boksburg’s challenge in impressive fashion.

Opener Dylan Nel top-scored for his side with 43 runs, while Marius Lubbe added 40.

Louis Geldenhuis also impressed with his undefeated 35 as his side marched to 191/6 after 29 overs.

Boksburg skipper Meyer was left a satisfied man despite defeat, and understandably so as his side has been struggling in the last month or so.

Boksburg’s squad was also weakened with a handful of its starters honouring their romantic duties.

“It’s been a tough weekend with more than half of the side not available for selection because of Valentine’s Day, but I have to say all the guys played well and gave it everything. I’m very proud of them,” said the skipper.
