Seven knockouts at the Prospects boxing extravaganza

On a day that produced seven knockouts in 11 fights, boxing aficionados were treated to unmitigated entertainment at the Prospects at the Palace boxing event at Emperors Palace on Sunday, February 7.

In possibly the fight that produced the highest boxing quality, Deejay Kriel and Kotle Morapedi produced a slug fest worthy of its main-event status.

In a fight of two halves, it was Morapedi who enjoyed the edge in the first three rounds before Kriel’s superior body conditioning saw him through for a unanimous win in the six rounder.

The decision meant Kriel maintained his undefeated streak (8-0; 4) while Morapedi fell to 4-4.

In another quality fight that went the distance, Xolani Mgidi claimed a deserved majority-decision victory against Harold Volbrecht, student, Lucky Mongebane in their lightweight clash.

The ring-savvier Mongebane brought a too-cautious approach and conceded more blows than he dished out, which earned Mgidi the win.

The officials scored it 38-38 on one card and 39-37 on the other two cards.

In the opening fight of the day, Anthony Moloisane defeated Nyiko Ndukulu on points over four rounds in their featherweight clash.

Joshua Studdard knocked Mthobisi Nkosi out after thoroughly connecting his right swing to the jaw in their junior bantamweight fight.

The decision came after a minute and 57 seconds of the first round.

Fans had barely recovered their concentration from the previous bout when Thulani Mbenge from the Smiths Boxing Gym handed Andile Mabilisa a stinging blow which immediately floored him, handing the former a knockout win just after a minute and two seconds into the first round.
