At approximately 2pm, paramedics from ER24 arrived on the scene and found a man and a woman with gunshot wounds.
The man (48) sustained gunshot wounds to his upper and lower leg while his wife, also in her 40s, was shot in the stomach.
She was in a critical condition.
ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said It is understood from the man that they were on their way home from holiday when their BMW X3 broke down along the N12 near the Voortrekker Road off ramp.
“While waiting in the emergency lane for breakdown services an unknown man apparently appeared and demanded valuables from the couple.
“Shortly thereafter he opened fire at the couple and ran away,” said Vermaak.
The injured husband explained to paramedics that he managed to get out of the vehicle and flag down passing motorists to call for help.
The couple were treated on the scene and transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
Police are investigating the incident.
