CBC beat Boksburg in local derby

CBC Old Boys Premier XI continued their recent winning streak with a five-wicket win over local rivals, the Boksburg Cricket Club on Sunday, November 22.

Visitors Boksburg, who were sent in to bat first, were forced to play a recovering game early on in their innings as they lost their opening pair of John Haywood and Bruce McKenzie in quick succession at CBC College.

This was the result of great bowling led by Vincent Moore and George Viviers, who was spurred on by the proverbial ‘Go George!’and ‘Yes Georgie!’ chants from his teammates.

Haywood was sent packing by Viviers following a contribution of just nine runs, a shocker to the batsman’s standards. McKenzie soon followed suit with only 10 runs behind his name.

To have a fighting chance, Boksburg required a calming figure and it arrived in the third wicket in the form of Heinrich Cronje, whose innings of half a ton brought in much-needed stability to the Blues’ stuttering innings.

Cronje went on to finish with an impressive 66 as he top-scored for his side on the day.

Freddie Whitehorne also brought genuine resistance to CBC’s dangerous bowling attack, contributing 41 runs as the travellers looked to steadily build on a challenging target.

Bowling revelation Aubrey Swanepoel was the third and last man in Boksburg’s batting order to score 20 or more runs in Len Meyer’s side’s innings before they finished with 177/8 in their allotted 50 overs.

In response, CBC, led by Willie Bernhardt who was deputising for the absent Shaun Liebisch, overhauled the 178-run target after only 32.3 overs.

Opening act Mark Pearce top-scored with 64 to give his side the necessary start before Moore and Jaydien Liebenberg (unbeaten on 27 and six respectively) finished off the game.

Ruan Liebisch (23) and Tyrone Cameron (28) also made telling contributions with the bat.

In the bowling figures, CBC’s Moore top-scored with a hat-trick and two maidens only conceding 30 runs. Viviers ended with 2/24 and two maidens.

The away captain, Meyer, who applauded CBC’s performance, also grabbed a brace of wickets, ending the match with 2/45.

“Congrats to CBC for playing better cricket and they were rewarded for their effort,” said Meyer. – @SabeloBoksburg
