Germishuizen century secures battle of the Old Boys
CBC Old Boys bounced back to winning ways in the Eastern Cricket Premier League, when they beat Springs Old Boys by 117 runs, in Springs, on Sunday, November 1.
A century by top order batsman Wickus Germishuizen and good bowling by George Viviers and former incumbent captain Willie Bernhardt gave the Boksburg outfit the full table points as they swiftly corrected their disappointing loss to Benoni Northerns the previous week.
CBC, who batted first, were awarded a solid start by Germishuizen’s early innings, with Adam Forbes (25) and Tyrone Cameron (42) helping to build the tally pressure on the home side.
The visitors went on to post a challenging 248 after 45.5 overs.
In response, Daniel Andrews gave Springs a much-needed promising start in their chase.
He, however, fell for 35 and the home team were dealt a further blow when his fellow opener left for five runs.
A combination of the loss of two important wickets early on and CBC’s big target seemed to trigger a collapse in the Springs batting attack.
Chris Ferreira was dismissed for a duck, while captain Barry Ingle was removed after just one run, as Springs’s opening quartet produced a combined paltry 41.
The home side’s capitulation continued as CBC regularly took wickets.
Exemplary performances with the ball by Bernhardt (3/17; one maiden), who was the stand-in skipper on the day in Shaun Liebisch’s absence, and George Viviers (3/20), helped to limit Springs to a total of 131 after 31.4 overs.
Springs’s silver lining in the defeat came in the form of Cameron Birnie’s showing with the leather, with the bowler finishing with 5/29 in his allotted 10 overs, including a maiden.
The show was, however, stolen by an overall collective performance by CBC as they claimed the crown of the battle of the Old Boys. – @SabeloBoksburg
