This is according to the latest crime statistics for 2015.
Between April 2013 and March 2014, there were 16 reported cases of murder, but this has jumped to 24 for the period April 2014 to March 2015.
There has also been a spike in attempted murder cases, with 20 cases being reported compared to 16 for the 2013/2014 period.
When it comes to property crime, a total of 460 houses in the residential area were burgled, which is up from the previous year’s 396 cases.
There have been successes when it comes to business burglaries, which have shrunk from the 144 reported
in 2014 to 98 in 2015.
Shockingly, 350 thefts of motor vehicles (up from 315) and 285 thefts from motor vehicles (up from 239) were reported in the Boksburg policing precinct over the 2014/2015 period.
When it comes to violent crimes, robbery at residential homes is marginally up from the 56 cases reported in 2014 to 67 reported in 2015.
Carjackings decreased from the 73 reported in 2014 to 42 in 2015.
In other serious crimes, eight people were reportedly kidnapped during the latest period, compared to three kidnappings in 2014.
The data also highlighted the positive results of the police actions to control criminal activities, which is reflected in the drop of total aggravated robberies from the 331 cases reported in 2014 to 315 in 2015.
Boksburg SAPS station commander Biggs Govender attributed the success to increased police visibility, newly formed task teams and a more sophisticated approach to catching perpetrators.
According to Govender, the stats reflected the good and the bad when it comes to the number of drug-related crimes, which declined from the 323 cases reported in 2014, to 245 reported in 2015.
“The higher the number of drug cases the better, because that means the police have done their job of ridding the streets of drug dealers; it means that officers have arrested many drug peddlers and confiscated large amounts of drugs,” said Govender.
Cases of sexual crime for 2014/2015 stand at 41, compared to 47 in 2013/2014.
