Gauteng Motor Fest soars into town
The engine-blaring, tyre-smoking, motorbike-soaring, drift car-spinning, go-karting, drag racing, helicopter flying Gauteng Motor Festival (GMF) returned to The Rock Raceway from Friday, July 24 to Sunday, July 26.
This was the second annual fest hosted by the City of Ekurhuleni, which saw a spectacle of motoring proficiency.
The popular automotive show, organised by Thebe Reed Exhibitions, had the tongues of petrol heads wagging.
The three-day extravaganza saw scores of motoring enthusiasts braving the cold weather for a breath-taking experience which left them hanging on the edges of their seats.
This year’s instalment of the GMF commenced on Friday, with the Woman in Motorsport breakfast session at Carnival City.
The event highlighted the participation of women in the male-dominated sport, as well as the challenges they face.
Saturday saw the drift masters bringing their A-game to entertain fans with their top of the range modified race cars, such as those seen in movies like The Fast and Furious.
The pulse-racing action kicked-off with the thrilling SupaDrift Series and professional GoKart Demo’s driven by both male and female drivers, as well as the Honda NSF100 motorcycle racing.
Sunday was the acme of the epic weekend, with speed stars giving a nail-biting performance on the raceway, showing off their best exhilarating drifting styles and skills.
The fifth round of SupaDrift Nationals was also held over the weekend, with Monster Energy drifter Jason Webb claiming the overall prize.
“As the City of Ekurhuleni, we are looking forward to working with Thebe Reed Exhibitions in growing the love of this unique sport within our borders,” said member of the Mayoral Committee for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Clr Dorah Mlambo.
“This will afford us the opportunity of educating our communities on the importance of prioritising safety and abiding by the law when partaking in racing and drifting.”
