Man jailed for 25 years for raping child (7)

The following cases were heard in the Boksburg Magistrates Court:

* Zimbabwean national Eliam Mbedzi was sentenced to 25 years in prison, for raping a seven-year-old child in 2012. The 31-year-old, who used to reside in Witfield, pleaded not guilty to the charge, but the court found him guilty and sentenced him on April 20.

On August 27, 2012, Mbedzi unlawfully and intentionally committed an act of sexual penetration on the child.

He has also been ruled unfit to possess a firearm and his name is to be admitted to the sexual offenders register.

He had no previous convictions.

Magistrate Colbert Ramofhufhi presided and prosecutor Jabu Motha represented the state.

* Siphelele Moraba (29), of the Jerusalem informal settlement, was convicted of a charge of robbery on April 20.

Moraba pleaded not guilty to stealing Natasha Goodman’s handbag, by force, at the East Rand Mall, in July 2013.

However, the court found him guilty and sentenced him to three years in jail, of which 18 months is suspended for five years.

Magistrate Ryan van Haarte presided and prosecutor Busi Mofokeng represented the state.

* Manuel Mamogoba (24), of Ramaphosa informal settlement, was found guilty of housebreaking with intent to steal and theft, on April 20.

He entered Rasa Hlakana’s premises and stole groceries valued at R150, in February, this year.

He pleaded not guilty, but was found guilty and sentenced to 30 months in prison, suspended for five years.

He has two previous convictions for assault, committed in 2011 and 2012.

Magistrates Ryan van Haarte presided and prosecutor Busi Mofokeng represented the state.

* Nhlanhla Nkabinde (22), of Alberton, was found guilty on two counts of theft, on April 21.

Nkabinde stole three canisters of polish from Shoprite in March, this year, and also stole two body lotions and one deodorant from Pick n Pay on February 17, 2014.

He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 18 months in prison, wholly suspended for five years. He had no previous convictions.

Magistrate Jurg Vivier presided and prosecutor Themba Maluleke represented the state.

* Siphiwe Siyelani Ndala (32), of Vosloorus, was imprisoned for theft, on March 20.

He first pleaded guilty, then changed his plea to not guilty, but the court still found him guilty.

Ndala stole five bottles of deodorant worth R65.95 from the Boxer Store, in Vosloorus, on February 15.

He has three previous convictions of theft, malicious damage to property and assault (x2). He was sentenced to three years in jail.

Magistrate Jurg Vivier presided and prosecutor Themba Maluleke represented the state.

* Tshepo Ntuli, of Vosloorus (26), was found guilty of two charges.

On December 28, 2014, he assaulted his mother, Christina Ntuli, punching her with a clenched fist.

She sustained several injuries and, on the same day, he attempted to steal an amplifier and a DVD player worth R7 000 from her.

He has no previous convictions and was sentenced to three years in jail.

Magistrate Jurg Vivier presided and prosecutor Themba Maluleke represented the state.
