‘We were quietly confident’ – Coulentianos on CBC’s win

CBC Old Boys’ Premier XI talismanic batsman, Wesley Coulentianos, said there was a lot on the line in his side's do-or-die match away against log leaders Benoni Northerns, on February 22.

CBC won by nine wickets and claimed a bonus point in their fourth consecutive triumph over their rivals.

Coulentianos, who led the side as a stand-in captain in place of squad skipper Willie Bernhardt, who couldn’t make the short trip to Benoni because of ‘flu, finished with an unbeaten 79 in his innings.

“We knew it was a must-win game for us if we wanted any chance of winning the league, so we just decided to be very aggressive with field settings and bowling changes,” he said.

“We put it all on the line. The win meant a lot to the boys, I think we all came into the season wanting to go to the club championships and this win made it possible.

“We know Northerns are a brilliant side, with many match-winners, so we knew it was going to be a tough game away from home, but, given our previous record against them, we were quietly confident.”

Asked whether the change in captaincy put added pressure on him to perform and on the team as a whole, Coulentianos responded: “Not really, I’ve captained teams my whole life, through school and at provincial level, so it wasn’t really anything new to me.

“The team really impressed me on Sunday, everybody did their part in a complete team performance.

“Northerns are still firm favourites, but we know what we have to do.

”We just have to win our remaining games convincingly and hope Springs do us favour by pulling an upset out of the bag against Northerns.”

Northerns and CBC are level on the summit with 49 points each, with the Benoni outfit having a game in hand.

The winner of the league will progress to the club championships at the end of the season.

Northerns travel to Springs this Sunday, where Springs Old Boys will be waiting, while CBC entertain KT Windies.
