Windmill taxi drama: Difference between lift club and taxi

Some vehicle owners in Windmill Park decided to use their private cars, at a charge of R5 per passenger, during the festive season, to provide transport for residents in the wake of taxis being forced to halt operations due to the ongoing taxi violence.

Little did they know what they thought was just helping the community would land them in trouble with the law.

According to Gauteng Traffic Police spokesperson Busaphi Mxumalo, there is a difference between running a lift club and running an illegal taxi rank.

“If you are doing lift clubs then it means you collect people from their homes and drop them at their destination,” she said.

“In Windmill Park, residents operated a taxi rank, which is unacceptable. You cannot help the community by running an illegal taxi rank; windmill Park doesn’t have a taxi rank.” – @NalediBoksburg
