‘Metro lies about Atlasville Spruit non-contamination’ – councillor

The apparent pollution of the Atlasville Spruit remains a contentious issue.

According to metro spokesperson Temba Gadebe, the Atlasville Spruit was subsequently cleared of excess sewer soon after the blockage was cleared.

However, according to Ward 23 Clr Andre Du Plessis, nothing was done to the spruit.

“What the metro is saying is a blatant lie. The metro never cleared that contamination and only recently the rain washed some of it away, but besides that, the municipality never visited that area.

“The metro previously denied that the area is contaminated before, and they are still in denial. We have no proof of anyone from the metro ever visiting the spruit.

Du Plessis says it was confirmed that there is a sewage overflow which polluted the watercourse during a site visit back on September 25.

“Since then, the spill has dried up, but there is still an unpleasant odour coming from the dry sewage.

“My independent tests clearly indicate that the E-coli count was in excess of 15 000 culture forming units, when the accepted health standards are below 20,” du Plessis says. – @NalediBoksburg
