Brakpan keep Community Cup hopes alive with Boksburg victory

G5 Metals Brakpan kept their Cell C Community Cup hopes alive with a 59-21 thumping of local rivals Kaufela Boksburg in their Valke Peregrine League (VPL) semi-final match at the Bosman Stadium on Saturday, July 26.

The defeat ends the Owls’ run in vying for a spot in the 2015 Community Cup with Brakpan moving on to playoffs for a spot in the tournament.

Their playoff opponents and dates are yet to be confirmed.

VPL Toppers Springs, who went unbeaten during the league’s round-robin phase, have been rewarded with automatic qualification to the Community Cup.

Asked what he made of the Owls’ performance in their VPL campaign, Boksburg Rugby Club chairman Sean Scheepers responded: “It was a bit of a mixed bag really; we had a couple of injuries and disappointments.”

“We didn’t play to our full potential and a lot that happened (during the campaign) is to do with our own doing. We’ve failed to deliver on our promise (to qualify for the Community Cup).

Scheepers added that despite the senior side falling short of Community Cup qualification, there were some positives in this year’s campaign.

“Our second side ended third in their league but it’s looking good for our u-21’s and third side who both topped their respective logs.”

Details for the remainder of the Owls’ season will be revealed at a later stage. – @SabeloBoksburg
