Lindelani community taught fire safety
The Department of Emergency and Medical Services (DEMS) accompanied by DA public relations for Ward 99, Clr Tsholofelo Motshidi, conducted a fire awareness campaign in the Lindelani informal settlement on Sunday, July 20.
DEMS station manager Ingrid Shingange organised the event, while shift manager Thami Mkhwanazi conducted the demonstrations.
According to Motshidi, the initiative follows the tragic shack fire that killed two brothers on Saturday morning, June 21, in Lindelani.
“In light of that shack fire and many others, it’s best to teach the community about fire safety to avoid further fire fatalities,” said Motshidi.
About 80 community members attended the demonstration and interacted with Mkhwanazi, Motshidi said.
“Demonstrations were based on how to fight fires, simple ways to handle candles, and building shacks three meters apart to avoid fire spreading from one shack to the next,” she explains.
The department also taught community members how to form a human chain when putting out a fire.
DEMS made a donation of stationery and school fees to the elder surviving brother (11) of the two boys who were killed in the shack fire. – @TumeloBoksburg
