Brakpan slay Boksburg
The concept of Karma, which implies what goes around comes around, must have been going through the minds of the G5 Metals Brakpan players.
This is after they completed a convincing 47-16 victory to avenge their narrow 34-33 loss in the reverse fixture against arch rivals Kaufela Boksburg at the Bosman Stadium on Saturday, July 12.
“I think to be honest, they outsmarted us, they didn’t allow us to get any quality ball while our first-time defence was pretty bad,” said Boksburg skipper, Dirk Bloem.
Indeed, the home team set the early tone upfront as they won most of the 50-50 collisions to create the base for the bonus-point win. They crossed the whitewash four times compared to the Owls’ sole score, with Dean Swartz dotting down for what was little more than a consolation score which Ryan Julies converted.
Mercurial fullback Ashley Buchler ended with nine points from the boot with three penalties.
The victory allowed Brakpan to secure a home semi-final against Boksburg when the play-offs come around this weekend – which will see first versus fourth and second versus third from the overall table.
Asked which areas will need to be rectified for the Owls to overturn their fortunes come the semi-final, Dirk responded: “Definitely our defence, and we will have to play better upfront to give the backs better quality ball.”
The Valke Peregrine League final will take place at the Barnard Stadium in Kempton Park on Saturday, August 2.
The winner will secure a spot in next year’s Cell C Community Cup tournament. – @SabeloBoksburg
