Make every day of July Mandela Day

Mandela Day is on July 18, but the government calls on South Africans to embrace the opportunity to celebrate the entire month of July as Mandela Month.

Acting Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) chief executive officer Phumla Williams says citizens should give off 67 minutes of their time to build a cleaner and better South Africa.

“South Africans are urged to take action, inspire change and make every day a Mandela Day.

“The 2014 Mandela Month celebration is particularly symbolic as it is the first one since former President Nelson Mandela’s passing. South Africans must uphold Mandela’s legacy of ensuring that all humans are provided equal opportunities to a better life,” says Williams.

“In 2010, the United Nation General Assembly declared July 18, Madiba’s birthday, the Nelson Mandela International Day which will be dedicated to his work and the values he lived by.

“The day is also dedicated to the service of fellow human beings by actively helping to change their circumstances.”

Williams reiterates President Jacob Zuma’s State of the Nation Address message, where government calls on South Africans to practice a healthier and cleaner way of living by taking care of their environment and cleaning up the areas where they live.

“The country can be beautified by getting together for a major clean-up of our cities, town, township, villages and schools”, said President Zuma.

Williams says action should be taken in helping to make a difference.

“In doing so we build a global movement for good. Let us go out in numbers and participate in activities that will improve our schools, charity homes and other non-profitable organisations to further bring about the change that Madiba fought for. No matter how small the action, the aim is to change the world for the better, just as Madiba did,” she adds. – @TumeloBoksburg
