Blues exact revenge on Benfica
The Boksburg Football Club Division One side came back from a goal down to beat Benfica 2-1, in Actonville, on Monday night (June 30).
The fixture was set up as a bit of a grudge match, after the previous encounter between the two sides had been called off with 20 minutes still remaining, due to ill-discipline from the Benfica players.
The points were, however, still given to Benfica, who were in the lead at the time, much to the bemusement of the Boksburg players, who felt they were still very much in contention during the game.
Boksburg were determined to get their revenge, but started the game on the back foot, with Benfica playing some enterprising football.
Despite Benfica having the better of the first half, Boksburg’s defence was resilient and held firm to keep the game goal until the half time break.
A lapse of concentration in defence proved costly for Boksburg early in the second half, as Benfica seized on the opportunity to go a goal up.
The goal, however, seemed to spur Boksburg into life as they pressed forward in search of an equaliser. Their increased effort was soon rewarded, when they levelled the scores from a set piece, with left wing David Daniel supplying the cross for striker Jacobus Steyn, who tapped home from close range.
Within minutes, Boksburg were in front. A great through ball from débutante Dion Oosthuysen put Steyn through on goal. He calmly rounded the keeper and fired home from a narrow angle, to increase his total goal tally for the season to 16.
Boksburg kept the pressure on Benfica, controlling the final stages of the game and were delighted to finish the game with another three points.
After a sluggish start to the season, the Division One team have now picked up five victories in their last seven fixures, including a 6-0 thumping of Olympia.
“The team have shown incredible growth through the course of the season and the spirit within the camp is fantastic; it showed in their fighting spirit this week, to come back from a goal down and win away from home,” said coach Tyrone Campbell.
