Sanral roadblocks are intimidation tactics – Outa

Recently Sanral’s E-toll vans strategically positioned themselves at the Gauteng SAPS license and numberplate vehicle checks.

Wayne Duvenage, chairperson of Outa, says these checkpoints had nothing to do with E-tolls and Sanral knew that their presence at these points would frighten a few more road users into tagging up out of fear.

“It is nothing but a naked intimidation tactic,” says Outa spokesperson, John Clarke.

But he says the alliance isn’t surprised by the claims.

“We warned right at the beginning that they were going to use hook, crook and spook tactics.”

Outa says the traffic police are well within their rights to set up roadblocks but Sanral has no right to interfere.

“Traffic officers are not allowed to ask any questions regarding E-tolls. If they do, you are encouraged to report them.”

Community Safety spokesperson, Thapelo Moila, says that Sanral has no right to be at the roadblocks and does not have the authority to stop people.

“The officers are not allowed to ask any questions regarding E-tolls.”

Motorists are urged to report officers to the Department of Community Safety, 78 Fox Street, Standard Bank Building, Johannesburg, 2001 or write to PO Box 62440, Marshalltown, 2170 or contact 011 689 3600 or fax 011 689 3650. – @CarmenBoksburg
