Metro aware of Impala residents’ frustration over outages

The Impala Park and Witkoppie Ridge areas started experiencing multiple power outages after the load-shedding that was done by Eskom in March, including four evenings in a row in the week ending April 26.

Residents, businesses, shoppers and others affected, started signing petitions in an attempt to attract the metro’s attention.

According to the metro acting spokesperson, Themba Gadebe, medium voltage cables (11 000 Volt) failed between the supply substation in Atlas Road and Sub 70.

“There were also failures on multiple ring feed cables within the Impala park and Witkoppie Ridge areas.”

Gadebe says that these faults are located and repaired as they occur, as there is no way of predicting when and where they might occur.

“Preventative maintenance cannot be done on underground cables. Preventative maintenance is done on switchgear and other auxiliary equipment within substations on a continuous basis.”

According to Gadebe, replacement of the feeder cables has been placed on the refurbishment budget request for the new financial year starting in July.

“The metro wishes to apologise to communities for any inconvenience experienced.”

* Petitions will be collected up to Monday, May 26, for submission by ward Clr Andrè du Plessis to the council meeting on Friday, May 29, when the budget is being considered.

Signed petitions can be submitted at the Northpoint Spar.
