Mpakathi wins Colgate Road Race

Club Zonkizizwe runner Ntsindiso Mpakathi produced a breathless performance to win the 2014 Colgate Road Race at the Boksburg City Stadium on Sunday, May 4.

The 24-year-old Soweto athlete crossed the 35km finish strip in 1:44:51 to claim the victory.

He was followed by Nedbank’s Africa Mailola and Olifantsfontein’s Lucky Mtshali, who rounded-up the top three.

“I feel good,” said Mpakathi of his win.

“I was prepared for the race and I’ve been preparing for it for about a month.”

Club Galloper’s Mpho Mabuza was the first female runner to cross the 32km finish line having arrived 23 minutes after Mpakathi in a time of 2:07:35.

Toyota’s Salome Cooper and Paula Quinsee completed the first three women.

Derocious Makhobalo posted an impressive time of 47.09 minutes on the day’s sub-distance to clinch the 15km race for the men, with Nobuhle Tshuma registering 58.48 minutes to be the only woman to finish the distance under the hour mark.

* 32km – men: 1. Ntsindiso Mpakathi (1:44:510). 2. Africa Mailola (1:46:39). 3. Lucky Mtshali (1:47:24)

* 32km – women: 1. Mpho Mabuza (2:07:35). 2. Salome Cooper (2:15:23). 3. Paula Quinsee (2:16:36)

* 15km – men: 1. Derocious Makhobalo (47.09). 2. Paulus Radebe (47.24). 3. Amos Tandjekwayo (47.28)

* 15km – women: 1. Nobuhle Tshuma (58.48). 2. Marliez Retief (61.50). 3. Maphuti Phaka (62.47)
