Battling it out for supremacy at Gauteng Marathon Championships
The Gauteng Marathon Championships took off at the Homestead Dam in Benoni, the home of the Ekurhuleni Kayak Canoe Club, on Saturday and Sunday, May 10 and 11.
The Championships served as trials for the selection of the Gauteng team, which will represent the province at the South African Marathon Championships, which will take place at the same venue over the weekend of June 7 and 8.
Saturday saw the K1 paddlers pit their strengths against each other in single canoes, which also included guppy paddlers between the ages of six and 12, with Sunday being the doubles championships (K2).
Top South African canoe singles (C1) paddlers, coach Radoslaw Olszewski and protégé Calvin Mokoto, who are both from Boksburg, finished third in the doubles (C2) event on Sunday.
On Saturday, Olszewski finished 46th overall in the 22km C1 race in 02:08:00 with Mokoto finishing three places behind his mentor in 02:13:00.
