FULL STORY: Brakpan sink Boksburg Community Cup hopes
G5 Metals Brakpan ran in five tries to Kaufela Boksburg’s two to claim a 48-23 bonus-point win over their local rivals at the Bosman Stadium on Thursday evening, March 20.
It was a perfect response by the homeside who suffered an agonising 27-26 narrow defeat to Pool C leaders Roses United in their opening match.
It was a typical derby between these two foes with the match starting at a fast pace with big tackles.
It was Brakpan who drew first blood through Dean van der Merwe for Gido Horn to convert, the flyhalf adding to his early penalty to make it 10-0 inside 20 minutes.
Boksburg never seemed to get going with Brakpan’s rush defence denying them any time on the ball in the early exchanges.
The homeside extended their lead with Horn slotting another penalty in the 21st minute to make it 13-0.
However, it did not dissuade Willie Smith’s men as fullback Ashwill Adams produced a dazzling run and slipping through several tackles before offloading to Marius Matthee for his side’s first try in the 24th minute, with Ashley Buchler converting.
Horn pulled three points back for his side when he converted a penalty to make it 16-7 nine minutes later.
Brakpan looked threatening with ball in hand and often made their chances count every time they visited Boksburg’s half.
The hometeam added to their lead towards the first-half hooter with a try through fullback Langa Damba. Horn added the extras to put his side in the driving seat at 23-7.
On the 40th minute, Boksburg No 10, Buchler added another three points from a penalty for a thirteen-point deficit.

Boksburg came out of the blocks first after the restart with a threatening move on the Brakpan’s 22-metre line. After stringing together multiple phases, the away side created an overlap with just a pass away from crossing the whitewash but it was Damba who scored after intercepting an Adams pass; with the fullback running the full length of the field for his second try.
Horn’s missed conversion leaving the score at 28-10.
Boksburg, however, refused to lie down and responded with ten points, starting with Adams’ well-worked try from deep in his side’s territory, sandwiched by a Buchler penalty and conversion.
Horn and Buchler exchanged penalties with a quarter of the match remaining to leave the encounter well-poised at 30-23 in favour of the homeside.
Brakpan, however, were not going to surrender the lead at their “House of Pain”. An additional Horn penalty was followed by two successive converted tries through Wikus van der Berg and Toby Strydom to effectively put the match out of Boksburg’s reach.

Boksburg sit in 4th in Pool C with six points after three matches.
Anything but a win in their last encounter against Centurion will see their Community Cup hopes shattered.
