Resident concerned over Bokkie Park shelter

Boksburg resident Roxanne du Plessis has expressed her concerns over the lack of shelter for animals at the Bokkie Park.

According to her, the metro stated that the shelter would be provided in December, last year.

She adds that while she is happy to see that the metro is doing something to improve the park, it has been three months later than the deadline, and still the animals have no shelter.

“It’s very unacceptable that nothing is being done to accommodate these poor animals,” she says.

Du Plessis adds that it has been raining for a weeks and the animals have no choice but to stand in the rain.

“The Bokkie Park is an attraction for the local people and many people go there regularly, to spend a day around the animals,” she says.

“How will this be possible in years to come if the poor animals die from cold and sickness, due to them not being properly sheltered and cared for?”

Du Plessis suggests that the metro charge a R2 entrance fee to the park, to raise funds for the upkeep.

According to Themba Gadebe, spokesperson for the metro, the new shelter at the Bokkie Park has been completed, but there is a delay in the provision of fencing.

He adds that no entrance fees are charged at any of the metro’s parks, in order to make them accessible for recreational purposes.

“For entrance fees to be feasible, the charge should be able to cover the cost of installing an electronic system as well as managing securing the system of collection,” he explains.

“This not considered to be economically viable at such low tariffs.”

He adds that the security company is there primarily to prevent theft of stock and vandalism to the premises.
