Plans for new bridge to cause road deviations

Motorists travelling on the R21 freeway north-east of Kempton Park CBD, between OR Tambo International Airport and Tshwane, are advised to exercise caution when approaching a short deviation on the north and south bound carriageways during road construction work.

Sanral announced that the detour, which will be located approximately 5km north of the airport, will allow for the construction of two new bridges.

Construction work will commence soon, and will take place over an estimated 14 months.

The deviation will be located approximately 700m south of the Birchleigh Interchange of the R21 with the R23.

The two new bridges that will be built are necessary for the construction of a new road to be called Riverfields Boulevard, which will go under the R21.

The bypass project is being paid for by a company called Tridevco, which owns land on either side of the R21, which it intends to developing. The development of the land is supported by the Ekurhuleni metro as it is in line with their agreed road masterplan for the area.

The deviation will take place in two phases to ensure minimum disruption of the free-flow of traffic on the busy freeway.

In the first phase, both the north and the southbound carriageways will be temporarily deviated. In the second phase, only the deviation of the southbound (Pretoria to Kempton Park) carriageway will remain.

Motorists are advised to observe the advance warning signs, be aware of driving conditions through the deviations, and are requested to exercise extreme caution and patience when travelling through the construction work zone.
