In Ekurhuleni mayor, Mondli Gungubele, unveiled 12 new ambulances and a new disaster bus on Friday, February 21.
In addition, 176 new fire-fighters have also been recruited and were officially dispatched to their posts on the day.
Ekurhuleni residents can now expect ambulance emergencies to be responded to within 15 minutes of making a call said the mayor.
Pointing out that the added fleet and staff members has not only had a tremendous impact on EMS performance, but has also increased the number of ambulances on the road at any given time.
“While in the past we averaged between 20 and 30 ambulances a day, now the average number of ambulances on the road 24/7 is 65, more than double what we had before.

” Having said this, we still have the mammoth task of reaching the required Norms and Standards of 106,” said Gungubele.
The mayor said the city has invested R78-3-m in the 12 fully-equipped ambulances, as well as R35-m on staff members (cost to company) in the past financial year.
