Race for second heats up as CBC OB beat Benoni

CBC Old Boys’ Premier XI beat their Benoni Northerns counterparts by four wickets in Benoni on Sunday, February 16.

This match has gone a long way to determine who finishes as the runner-up behind Kempton Park on the log.

The last preliminary round before the beginning of the T20 will see Benoni welcoming log leaders Kempton and CBC playing host to log tail-enders Tembisa, where the hosts will fancy their chances of a win, and hope Kempton does the job in Benoni.

CBC captain Willie Bernhardt finished as the top bowler in the encounter where he generated numbers of 3/28 in four overs after his coin toss win, and sending skipper Kurt Francis and his team to bat first.

Divan Posthimus also took three with numbers of 3/39 in nine overs, including one maiden.

Benoni middle-order batsman Dean van Ruben finished with a smashing unbeaten 93, and was joined by teammate Charl Sleyn (55) in reaching the half century mark.

Opener Earnest Kemm scored 10 but opening partner JP Kok and Francis finished with nil.

The low scoring hurt the homeside that eventually finished with 213/8 in their 50 overs.

CBC’s Nicholas Lockyer finished one short of a half century with 49. Opener Wesley Coulenthianos was back to his best, smashing 80 and setting-up a successful run chase of 214/ 6 in 47.3 overs.

GC Pretorius finished as Benoni’s top bowler, claiming 2/38 in ten overs.
