GDE assists matriculants

While matriculants are now registering at various colleges and universities, there are many who cannot afford to further their education.

Phumla Sekhonyane, spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Education, says their vision, as the GDE, is to ensure that all learners in Gauteng do well at school and leave the institution with the values, knowledge, skills and qualification that will give them the best chance of success in their adult life.

“As a department we provide bursaries to all the top three Grade 12 learners in priority schools through the Gauteng City Region Academy (GCRA),” she explains.

“We also source assistance from our partners, such as the Sector Education Training Authority (Seta), state entities, other government departments and the private sector, for those learners who have done well, but do not meet our criteria.”

Sekhonyane adds that learners also have the opportunity to apply for learnerships and apprenticeships or to attend vocational courses.

Learners who did not perform as well as they would have liked, have an opportunity to write supplementary examinations in February and March 2014, or they can rewrite a few subjects in October and November 2014.
