According Rev Theunis Botha, it is a great concern that the extraordinary hike in the pass rate had more to do with the 2014 election year than with improved education.
“We have noted that the opinion polls indicate that many young people are not interested to vote, thus, they are concerned that the government are attempting to lure them into not only voting, but voting for the ruling government by creating an illusion of optimism,” says Botha.
“Therefore, in the end, someone will have to pay the price for disillusion, and probably the old Bantu education will once again be the target.
“Hence there is no replacement for hard work, dedicated teachers, correct selection of subjects and an attitude to perform.
“These factors are often ensured by parent governing bodies, but government is encroaching on this principle, and expanding its attitude that quality does not matter.”
