Municipality makes allegedly R24-m from levy

In a recent report, it was alleged that the Ekurhuleni metro had collected up to R24-m from nearly 800 000 homes through the R5.70 cleansing levy, which was erroneously implemented.

The metro has denied these allegations, and says no calculations have been made to support this.

Metro spokesperson Sam Modiba says the matter will be considered by council when the adjustment budget is submitted.

“The Finance Department has not yet made any calculations of the financial implications of the project. The amount cannot be confirmed at this stage, and will only be determined in the report that council will consider,” says Modiba.

In a previous statement, Modiba had stated that the council could only rectify the error when it tables its budget in February next year.
