Taking a stand against women and children abuse

Each year the 16 Days of Activism Campaign provides an opportunity for South Africans to host events aimed at raising awareness to end gender violence.

Mercy Haven will take part in various awareness campaigns around the East Rand to take a stand against the abuse of women and children.

“This time of the year is an opportunity for us to disseminate information to the community, as well as increase our visibility,” says Mercy Haven co-founder Zelda Nkabinde.

Mercy Haven, along with SAPS, People Opposing Women Abuse (POWA), Victim Empowerment Centres (VEC), Ithemba Trauma Centre and other homebased care centres, the Youth Desk, CPF, Lovelife and other stakeholders will take to the streets from November 25.

They will hand out pamphlets, conduct door to door campaigns, as well as educate the public on the importance of the campaign.

“If we come in numbers we are able to spread the message of curbing abuse against women and children,” says Nkabinde.

Nkabinde says they are hoping to reach over a 1 000 people through their various events and activities.

Their activities will kick off on November 28, in Angelo informal settlement, where they will hand out pamphlets.

Other venues and dates for their events in Boksburg include:

n December 5 – Shoprite, Boksburg at 9am

n December 9 – Chris Hani Mall, Vosloorus at 9am
