Abandoned building serves as a den for criminals

The dilapidated building at 29 Market Street, Boksburg CBD, has turned into a hotspot of criminal activity and where hoodlumism.

The Boksburg police and people living close to the area say criminals sneak into the premises and rob people who walk along the area at night, sometimes in broad daylight.

The building was formerly used as a home for destitute people by the People Rescue Centre, but the occupants were ejected in January 2011 on the excuse that it was unsafe to house people.

They were given a short notice to vacate the premises. But when they did not quit, they were ejected on July 5.

The Advertiser recently visited the area and observed that the premises were littered with faeces and heaps of refuse.

The stench of marijuana and urine also filled the air.

It has also been discovered that vagrants have tried to outsmart authorities by squatting on top of the roof of the building.

An employee, who works opposite the building, says he has seen a number of people moving in and out of the abandoned building.

In an attempt to rid the building of criminals, the metro sent its police officers to raid the premises, however, that apparently only happened on May 28.

During May, the metro also promised residents that it would appoint a specialist demolition company to demolish the building up to slab level, before November, but the metro failed to keep its promise.

The eyesore is still standing and is security threat.

As a temporary measure, the metro promised to seal off the area to protect it against vagrants, but this also has not happened.

Recent attempts to contact the metro on this issue went unanswered.
