Donate blood and receive a gift

In an effort to avert shortages during the festive season, the South African National Blood Services (SANBS) is running a promotion to thank donors for their lifesaving donations.

The promotion, which started on November 1, will run until December 31.

During this period, every person who comes to the East Rand Donor Centre to donate blood, will receive a free picnic blanket in appreciation of his or her effort.

According to Mpho Letlatsa, PRO at the Boksburg South African National Blood Service, the aim is to fill up the blood banks to avert shortages during the festive season.

“We want to make sure that we have enough blood to meet the ever-present high demand of blood during the festive season.”

Letlatsa states that the shortage of blood in the country during the holiday season is exacerbated by the increase in number of road accidents, and the fact that some of the regular donors are away on holiday, during the festive season.

They ask all residents who are between 16 years and older, weigh 50kg or more, lead a sexually safe lifestyle and must have eaten at least four hours before, to visit the donor site and help the organisation to prevent blood shortages.

For more information on where to donate blood, contact the SANBS on 011 897 4906 or e-mail mpho.letlatsa@sanbs.org.za or visit www.sanbs.org.za.
