Vosloorus SAPS member brings award home
The 9th Annual Afrisun/Ekurhuleni SAPS Merit Awards were held on Saturday, November 16, at Carnival City, and saw Lieut-Col Michael Mgcibelo Zulu, from Vosloorus, taking the award for the Best Reservist.
Zulu was awarded for the outstanding work he has been doing in the community, as it is said that he has been involved in cases of arrests made involving drug syndicates and drug mules.
Four members from Boksburg’s SAPS, and not three as previously reported, were nominated in different categories at the Ekurhuleni SAPS Merit Awards.
The other three nominees were:
* Best VISPOL member (CSC and Crime Prevention members): Const France Ledwaba (Boksburg North) and Const Lufuno Mudzuli (Reiger Park)
* Best Detective: Capt Andre Jordaan (Reiger Park)
* Best Social Crime Prevention and/or communication member: Const France Ledwaba (Boksburg North).
The Awards honoured the men and women who regularly go beyond the call of duty, to ensure the safety and security of all those living in Ekurhuleni.
Due to Zulu’s good skills in testifying in court, two murder suspects were sentenced to life imprisonment by the regional court, and most suspects arrested by him pleaded guilty to their charges.
* He has arrested 75 people for dagga possession and usage.
* Arrested 15 people for assault.
* Recovered six unlicensed firearms.
* Assisted detectives in solving and arresting four murder cases in the Nguni Hostel.
Members had to nominate themselves, and write motivational letters to support their nominations.
Award categories included permanent members of SAPS, civilians, reservist, best community police forum, best team, best social crime prevention or communication member and best VISPOL member.
