Teacher accused of assault

A Parkdene Primary School teacher has been accused of allegedly assaulting a Grade 4 learner during school hours on October 1.

The same learner was found to have been exposed to racial and derogatory comments from his music teacher during October 2012.

“In the past year, my child has not only experienced racial and religious discrimination, but the abuse has now escalated to a physical kind,” says the father of the learner, known to the Advertiser.

“Beginning of this term, a student teacher teaching at the school grabbed my child’s hand so hard that his nails pierced into his skin.”

Station commander, Col Biggs Govender confirmed that the an assault case against a Parkdene Primary School teacher had been opened, investigated, and will soon be handed over to the prosecutor.

“The docket will go in front of the prosecutor and if the teacher is then summoned, he will appear in court,” says Govender.

Spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Education, Gershwin Chuenyane, released comment noting that the department was aware of the incident and would intervene.

“We have instituted an independent investigation due to the nature and history of the complaints,” he says.

“The investigation will cover all circumstances around the incident and the outcome of the investigation will determine the department’s action.”
