Goju Karate Academy shines at Ekurhuleni trials

Goju Karate Academy collected 27 medals at the Ekurhuleni District Trials held at the University of Witwatersrand on Saturday, September 28.

This came after the Sunward Park-based academy’s top 28 ahletes, who were also competing for their Eastern Gauteng colours, won six gold, eight silver and 13 bronze medals.

Elsewhere, academy instructors Sensei Marius, and Tarryn Madgwick, both came in second in the senior kata male and female divisions respectively – earning themselves their provincial colours.

Out of the 28 academy representatives, 22 managed to finish in the top four of their respective divisions and booked their spots for the upcoming Gauteng Championships – also earning themselves their provincial colours.

Moreover, two Protea athletes from the academy, Marius Madgwick and Gareth Hird took part at the Commonwealth Karate Championships in Canada on the weekend of October 12 and 13.

Marius won gold in the senior (18 years and over) team kata division and fifth in the senior individual division, missing the bronze medal by one round.

Hird finished seventh in the junior division (u-16 and 17).

The Gauteng Championships takes place at the end of November with the South African Championships set to take place at the end of January.

Venues for both championships are yet to be confirmed.
