Constable kills husband, shoots herself

A Van Dyk Park mother (38) fatally shot her husband on Saturday night, October 5, before turning the gun on herself at around 11.50pm.

Const Sandra Khalane, who serves at the Boksburg SAPS, shot herself and husband while their two children, one being only four months, were present.

The nine-year-old child managed to call a family friend who is also a colleague of the mother.

The man was shot four times.

Two suicide notes were also found at the scene.

Lieut Mthanda Ngobese confirmed the shooting, adding that an investigation is underway.

The killings stunned Khalane’s colleagues, who say the couple was known as being “normal and happy”.

“It is an appalling tragedy. She was clearly in a terrible state to have done such a thing,” said a police source.

According to her colleague, Capt Bongisiwe Mbatha, Khalane was always happy and smiling and didn’t seem to have any serious problems.

“I can’t believe this has happened. She has never caused any problems and we are still struggling to come to terms with this shooting.”

Khalane’s memorial service was held at St Dominics Church on Thursday morning, October 10.
