Michael and son Liam win award at Hansa Fish river

Michael Stewart and son Liam won the Father and Son Award at the 2013 Hansa Fish River Canoe Marathon, which ran from Grassmere dam to Cradock on the weekend of September 27 and 28.

This came after the pair from Boksburg completed the 80km marathon, which spanned over two days, in an overall time of five hours and 49 minutes and finished as the first East Rand Kayak paddlers.

Their overall position in the doubles race, which included more than 500 pairs, was 82nd – earning them a top 100 finish.

The A-grade marathon race includes numerous obstacles, weirs, rapids and shutes for enjoyment and attracts well over 1 000 paddlers of all abilities and strengths.

Liam (14), who attends Ashton International College in Benoni, has in addition won a few podium positions with his father of local river races before the Hansa race.

Meanwhile, James and Donna Tutton also from the East Rand Kayak Club, kept their husband-and-wife team chemistry in tact and finished just under the six-hour mark in five hours and 59 minutes.
