This year’s Heritage Day saw athletes of all ages ditching their traditional attire for their running gear, for the Sportsmans Warehouse 5km fun walk and 15km road race, at the East Rand Value Mall.

The September 24 meeting started at 6am, with runners competing to cross the big red balloon finish-line, to be one of the first 400 athletes to finish the 5km walk, and first 800 for the 15km, to guarantee themselves a medal.

Sportsmans Warehouse run veteran Arthur Boyce won the men’s Great Grandmasters category, and was the oldest male victor of the day.

The 72-year-old, from Daveyton, started competing as far back as 1980 and was in a very jubilant mood after his achievement.

“I love running; running is life. The youth get very encouraged when they see me run,” said Boyce.

His achievements include a Soweto Grand Master win in 2010, three Bruce Fordyce Ultra-Marathon wins, in 2009, 2010 and 2011, and a 21km Birchwood Marathon gold medal, to list a few.

Winners of the day included more familiar faces, with Boikanyo Kodisane from Tshwane winning the junior category, after being in the top three in last year’s event.

All finishers on the day received Birchwood Spur vouchers, with all category winners of the 15km race receiving gold medals on the day.
