Former immigration officer gets five-year sentence in fraud case

The court heard that the defendant unlawfully and falsely went about his job in multiple cases for his financial gain. 

The former immigration officer of the Department of Home Affairs is heading to jail after being found guilty on two charges of fraud.

The Regional Court magistrate sentenced 59-year-old Johannes Malekane to two five-year prison terms which will run concurrently on February 28, at the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court.

Malekane was implicated on charges of theft, corruption and defeating the ends of justice but was found guilty of fraud.

Malekane pleaded not guilty of the above three counts and the two fraud counts in January 2018.
