CBC Old Boys kept their chances of play-off cricket alive with a dramatic eight-run win over Benoni Northerns in Benoni in their Eastern Cricket Premier League Top 6 clash on February 23.
The clash was reduced from 50 to 22 overs because of the weekend rain, with proceedings getting underway at 1.45pm instead of the normal time of 10am. Old Boys managed to score 116/8 with in-form wicket-keeper Dylan Bennie on the forefront during his team’s batting innings – finishing with an unbeaten 34.
The tourists, much like their neighbours Boksburg when they too caused an upset at Northerns recently, followed up with a superb bowling display to dispatch the fancied hosts for a collective 108/9 in 22 overs to keep their chances alive.
The pair of Sherwyn Pillay and Rynard de Lange shone with the leather for Old Boys, both claiming outstanding numbers of 3/13, including two maidens and 3/14 respectively.
They both essentially took a combined six wickets and conceded only 27 runs in the process in 10 overs of bowling to all but win the all-important encounter.
Hardly ever do you see the highest run scorer put up 22 runs for Northerns – but it was the case as Kundai Matigmu scored 22 which was the highest for his side.
Old Boys’ victory completed a double for Boksburg sides over the mighty Northerns with Benoni also securing a famous win in Benoni a little over a fortnight ago.
Old Boys skipper Casey Arnold said: “It was an awesome game, really happy to get the win and just to show a bit of fight. We still in the game somehow, we still in the season. We have to win three out of three. ”
Remaining games:
March 8 – Alberton (away)
March 15 – Bedfordview (home)
