CBC defeated at the hands Kempton

Next for Old Boys? Boksburg Cricket Club at Prince George Park.

CBC Old Boys captain Casey Arnold was left a frustrated figure when he and his teammates missed out on an opportunity to claim a big win at home as they welcomed Eastern Cricket Premier League powerhouses Kempton Park on February 16.

The visitors claimed a five-wicket win with a little over an over of batting remaining, undoing a fine start by the home side, who put up 100 runs on the board without loss early on during the day.

The skipper was a cornerstone to that fine start with 48 runs and would complement it by taking 2/34 with the leather during the day’s second innings.

Old Boys rose to the occasion. They had to, it’s the Top 6 – there’s little to no room for error.

Apart from an unlucky Sherwyn Pillay and Jaydin Liebenberg, all of their batsmen registered double-digit scores. Arnold’s score was the highest and stalwart Dylan Bennie finished with an impressive unbeaten 40, as the hosts posted a near-enough collective score of 233/6 in their allotted 50 overs.

Kempton pair Sean Alridge and Sarel Myburgh were responsible for all of CBC’s fallen wickets, taking 3/51 and 3/35; 1 respectively.

Alridge and teammate Armand Erasmus finished with an undefeated 21 and 24 respectively, as their team ended with a collective score of 234/5 after 48.4 overs.

That arrived after a display of exemplary chasing cricket, with opener Wesley Marshall smashing 75 and fellow top order Murray Workman adding 57.

Wicketkeeper and Marshall’s partner in the opening responsibilities, Danie Rossouw, hit 43.

“I’m not happy with the loss again,” lamented Arnold.

“Myself and Mark Pearse were going nicely, but again we’ve been good against the big teams; we are our own worst enemies. Whenever it counts, we just can’t seem to sustain pressure.

“It’s disappointing to lose to them twice now. Twenty-five runs in the first game and with 12 balls in the second game just because of our own mistakes. I think we definitely have a pressure problem at CBC, and we need to look at it.

“The guys fought hard, we’re always in with a game. We just, when it counts, can’t quite keep it there.”
