Rotarian Jessica Kok now a Paul Harris Fellow

The 85-year-old was the tour leader for the Rotary Club Boksburg’s Badplaas project for 25 years.

The Rotary Club of Boksburg recently honoured Jessica Kok (85) as an honorary member of the club and recognised her as a Paul Harris Fellow.

According to past district governor Anton Meerkotter, the Rotary in Badplaas started 60 years ago and the cornerstone of the building was laid in 1960.

The public relations officer for Rotary Club Boksburg, Elsa Venter, said: “Seven Rotary Clubs are now involved in the resort, which include Standerton, Witbank, Ermelo, Middelburg, Bethal, Piet Retief and Evander.

“Many senior citizens save up the whole year to join the group organised by the Rotary Club of Boksburg once a year.

“Often, as part of the project, clubs may sponsor a couple’s holiday. Kok’s smallest group consisted of 62 guests and the largest one of 82 was in 2015,” Venter said.

Kok took all the bookings during her 25 years as tour leader and has taken control of the programme for the week at Badplaas. Many pleasurable activities formed part of the holiday. There would be a fancy dress, a concert, bingo evenings and games.

Jessica’s last year as a tour leader was in 2015, although she still joins the group every year.

Dianne Venter is now the new tour leader.

“Jessica said that she spent 25 joyful years on this project largely because she understood the senior citizens. She took responsibility for the complete management of the resort for two weeks when Chris Engelbrecht, the manager, was seriously ill.

“Her tasks included drafting documents and checking indemnities, administration and taking care of guests who had fallen ill, which happens often,” Venter said.

The cost for the week’s holiday was originally R350 per person, whereas it currently amounts to about R2 300 per person.

Kok wished the group all the best and thanked them for the marvellous years she spent as a tour leader of the Rotary Club of Boksburg’s group.
