Brakpan claim bragging rights against Boksburg

The bonus-point win completed the double for Braam Booysen’s men over the Owls following their win in the two sides’ reverse clash in Brakpan a few weeks ago.

The Brakpan Rugby Club have claimed the bragging rights over cross-town rivals TW Boksburg with a 30-22 entertaining victory in their Volcano Trophy match at Prince George Park on June 1.

The Owls picked up a bonus point for their showing, scoring four tries to Brakpan’s five, but it only served as consolation as the travellers walked away with maximum points.

Owls skipper Johan Labuschagne said: “It’s never nice losing against Brakpan, especially at home. I can’t really say what went wrong: we were penalised on numerous occasions where we felt we shouldn’t have been.

“We still did great if you look at the score and most of the calls went against us. After about 30 penalties, you’d think someone would’ve been sent to the sin bin, but no one was.

“I only got sent to the bin because myself and the ref had some words, but no one who was penalised was given a yellow card.

“We could’ve been more clinical at times, but all in all we showed great character once again. Everything went against us, but we fought back hard,” said the skipper.

The Owls’ bonus point was courtesy of centre pairing Damian Diedericks and Prince Mofokeng, who dotted one a piece accompanied by an Attie van der Nest brace. First receiver Henry Pike converted one.

There was an added twist to the tie with the return of prolific outside centre David Woolls, who currently plies his trade in Zimbabwe.

Woolls, the younger brother to Brakpan’s prop forward Gary, returned to the country to feature in the derby, and what a cameo appearance it was.

After coming on in the second half, the mercurial midfielder hurt his former side with a try of his own to underline his presence.

His participation, however, caused controversy with his registration to his club in Zimbabwe coming under the spotlight after being allowed to play for Brakpan.

According to a statement from the Valke Rugby Union, which is the governing body of local club rugby, an official investigation has been launched.

David has since returned to Zimbabwe.
